a Quilt For Henry

This quilted playmat was a study in shape and movement. I created it for my godson Henry in anticipation of his birth in April of 2021. I decided to create a ‘sensory play’ mat that was interactive, including fuzzy textures, moveable flaps, and crinkly sounds.

The finished quilt.

Using fabrics from my scrap stash, I assembled a color palette of fresh, bright primaries with a bit of black and royal blue for contrast. The light coral fabrics are naturally dyed with madder root. The entire piece was quilted by hand using traveling lines throughout the negative space and creating definition in the patchwork areas.
